Peter's story
Although I had had an interest in the work of Mvumi Hospital for some time I had no thoughts of working overseas, or even changing my job. It was while at a harvest festival service, just after I had decided on a walking holiday in the Atlas Mountains (as a way of using up some leave) that I was struck by the very clear thought 'why don't you do something useful like going to Mvumi?'. Unable to think of a good reason for not going to Mvumi for a couple of weeks, Alison and I started making plans to go. It soon became apparent that two weeks would not be worth doing so it became a month. Even when, a year later, I set out to travel to Tanzania, I had no plans to go back long term.
Once at Mvumi it was obvious that there was a need for the sort of work that both Alison and I could do and I was asked by the then head of the lab, if I would consider coming back. Once at home again I felt that I had to do everything I could to either return to Mvumi or find somewhere else to work in a similar situation.
Was this a 'calling from God'? The initial thought was so out of the blue and so strong and at every turn 'coincidences' have pushed us back in the direction of Mvumi that I have great difficulty accepting it was anything other than a call from God.
